What you can carry

Power banks and lithium batteries, liquids, medicine, valuables and dangerous goods.

Most of what you pack is up to you. A few things are limited by aviation safety and airport security rules, which apply on every airline. This is how they work on Northly.

Power banks and spare lithium batteries

Power banks, spare lithium batteries and e-cigarettes travel in the cabin only, in your personal item or your cabin bag. They never go in a checked bag, or in a bag that goes in the hold at the gate: take them out first.

  • Up to 100 Wh per battery: no approval needed. At most 20 spare batteries per person. Most phone power banks and laptop batteries are in this group.
  • From 100 Wh to 160 Wh: at most 2 spare batteries per person, and only with our approval. Ask at least 48 hours before departure, in the chat or with a special assistance request.
  • Over 160 Wh: not carried.

Protect the terminals against short circuit, with tape or in the original packaging. Keep a power bank where you can reach it, not in the overhead locker. E-cigarettes are never used or charged on board.

A wheelchair or mobility aid with a lithium battery travels free; tell us the battery's watt-hours when you ask for assistance. See Special assistance.

Liquids

Liquids in your cabin luggage follow the security rule of the airport you leave from. The standard EU rule is:

  • containers of 100 ml or less
  • all in one resealable, transparent bag of 1 litre
  • medicine and baby food are exempt

Some airports with newer scanners allow more. Check the departure airport's website before you pack, for the flight out and the flight home.

Medicine

Keep medicine in your cabin luggage, with your travel documents, so it stays with you if a checked bag is delayed. See Medical conditions and medication.

Alcohol in your bags

Alcohol between 24 and 70 percent, in its retail packaging, may go in a checked bag, up to 5 litres per person. Alcohol over 70 percent is not carried at all. Alcohol you bring on board stays sealed; see Food and drink on board.

Not carried at all

These travel neither in the cabin nor in the hold:

  • fireworks and flares
  • gas canisters, and camping stoves with fuel
  • paint, flammable liquids and bleach
  • alcohol over 70 percent

You may carry one lighter or one box of safety matches on your person. If you are not sure about an item, ask us before you fly.

Valuables

Keep jewellery, cash and electronics in your cabin luggage. Our conditions of carriage exclude them from claims on checked bags.

Sizes and weights

The bags themselves are in Your personal item, Cabin bags and priority boarding and Checked bags.
