Medical conditions and medication

Medicine in your cabin luggage, medical oxygen, pregnancy, fitness to fly and who to ask.

If you have a medical condition, tell us what you need before you fly, and keep what you rely on with you.

Medicine

Keep medicine in your cabin luggage, your personal item or your cabin bag, never only in a checked bag. It then stays with you if a checked bag is delayed. Liquid medicine is checked at airport security under that airport's rules; see What you can carry.

Pregnancy

  • Up to the end of week 27: you fly with no document.
  • From the start of week 28: carry a letter from your doctor or midwife, dated within 14 days of the flight. It gives your expected due date, says whether you expect one baby or more, says the pregnancy is uncomplicated and says you are fit to fly. The gate may ask to see it.
  • The last flight: we carry you until the end of week 36 with one baby, and until the end of week 32 with twins or more.

Weeks count on the date of each flight, so check the return flight too. You are not seated in an exit row while pregnant, and you can ask for assistance at the airport; see Special assistance. A newborn can fly from 14 days old; see Infants and children.

Fitness to fly

Most medical conditions need nothing from us. A medical form is needed when:

  • you need your own medical oxygen on board (OXYG)
  • you have had surgery or a hospital stay in the 10 days before the flight
  • you have a condition that could need medical help during the flight
  • you have an infectious disease
  • you need to run a medical device from the aircraft during the flight

The form is a fit-to-fly statement from your doctor, and a colleague reviews it before the flight. Send it at least 48 hours before departure.

A plaster cast fitted within 48 hours of the flight must be split. Northly carries no stretchers and sells no oxygen on board.

Help at the airport and on board

Special assistance is free: a wheelchair, help for blind or deaf travellers, an assistance dog, or meet and assist for another reason. Ask at least 48 hours before departure so both airports are told in time. See Special assistance.

With an assistance request, you are not seated in row 1 or an exit row, and the airport check-in fee is waived.

A medical question about your flight

Every medical form, and every question about whether you are fit to fly, is answered by a colleague, never by the chat on its own. Ask before you book, so there is time to arrange it.
