Compensation under EU261
Amounts, distance bands and causes.
On every Northly flight, EU Regulation 261/2004 applies. Norway and Iceland are in the European Economic Area, so it covers our whole network.
When you are owed compensation
If your flight is cancelled, or arrives 3 hours or more late, and the cause was within our control.
How much
Per passenger, by the distance of the flight:
- Up to 1,500 km: EUR 250
- Over 1,500 km within the EEA, or 1,500 km to 3,500 km: EUR 400
- Over 3,500 km: EUR 600 (no Northly route is this long)
Compensation is always in euro. It is halved if we reroute you and you arrive within 2, 3 or 4 hours of the original arrival time, for those three bands.
Notice for cancellations
- Told 14 days or more before departure: no compensation.
- Told 7 to 13 days before: none if the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and arrives less than 4 hours later.
- Told less than 7 days before: none if it leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and arrives less than 2 hours later.
Causes outside our control
No compensation is owed for these, though care always is:
- Weather
- Air traffic control restriction or strike
- Airport closure or airport systems
- Security
- Strike at a third party: ground handling, fuel
- Diversion for a passenger
- Bird strike
Causes within our control
Compensation is owed for these:
- Technical
- Crew sickness or duty limits
- Late inbound aircraft
- Operational
- Strike by Northly's own staff
How to claim
Ask in the chat or open the booking in Manage booking. We check the flight, tell you the amount, and file the claim with your bank account (IBAN) or as travel credit. We decide within 14 days of having everything we need and pay within 7 days of approval. If you disagree with the cause, we file the claim anyway and a colleague reviews it.
In this fiction, Northly applies these euro bands on flights from London Gatwick and Edinburgh too. In reality the UK rules, with amounts in pounds, would apply there.
