Travel documents for UK flights
What we need for flights to or from London and Edinburgh, and when; what the UK border decides.
London Gatwick and Edinburgh are outside the Schengen area. On flights to or from them, we must have each passenger's travel document details before check-in.
What we need
For each passenger:
- passport or national identity card number
- nationality
- expiry date
- date of birth
When
Before you check in. Without these details online check-in is blocked for that flight. If you add them, online check-in opens as normal.
If you cannot add them online
The airport desk checks your document instead, and the desk fee of NOK 399 (EUR 35) is waived in this case.
How to add them
- Ask in the Northly Help chat on this site, when it is open. Travel documents cannot be added in Manage booking.
- Give the details exactly as on the document.
- Confirm with the one-time code we send to the email address or mobile number on the booking.
We show the document number back to you masked, with only the last three characters visible. Nobody at Northly reads it back to you in full.
What the UK border decides
The details above are what Northly needs to check you in. We record the passport or identity card you give us and check that it is valid for the trip. Whether you may enter the United Kingdom is decided by the UK border, not by Northly, and the UK sets its own rules.
Two of those rules, as a pointer and not as Northly's rule:
- Since 2021 the UK accepts a national identity card from EU and EEA citizens only in limited cases, for example with UK settled or pre-settled status. Most travellers need a passport.
- From Feb 25, 2026, most visitors who do not need a visa must hold an electronic travel authorisation, an ETA, before they fly.
Northly does not check the ETA, and cannot tell you whether you will be admitted. Check the rules for your nationality on gov.uk before you book, and travel with the document and permission they ask for.
Schengen flights
On every other Northly route no document data is collected before travel. You still need a valid passport or identity card at the airport. You are responsible for carrying a valid travel document and any visa your destination asks for; see Conditions of carriage.
How long we keep it
Travel document details are deleted 30 days after the flight. See Conditions and privacy.
Pets
Pets in the cabin cannot travel to or from London Gatwick or Edinburgh. See Pets in the cabin.
