About Edinburgh
Edinburgh is built on hills, with the castle on its volcanic rock at the top of the Royal Mile and the Georgian streets of the New Town below. The Gothic spire of the Scott Monument stands in Princes Street Gardens between the two.
In August the city fills for its festivals; the rest of the year it is quieter. Arthur’s Seat, a hill in the middle of the city, takes about an hour to climb.
