About Stavanger
Stavanger is a harbour town on the southwest coast, with a white wooden old town, Gamle Stavanger, on the slope above the quay. It is the usual starting point for Lysefjord and for the walk to Preikestolen, the flat rock 600 metres above the water.
The Preikestolen hike takes most of a day there and back and is best from spring to autumn; in winter go with a guide. In town, the petroleum museum on the harbour explains how the region changed.
